SIPS FileSafe

FileSafe is our online cloud backup platform. The ideal solution to securely backup your schools data, whether located on a physical server or held in the cloud..  The data is protected against total loss should the infrastructure or fabric of the school be compromised.  All data is transferred to a secure UK data centre and held in an encrypted form, preventing access by unauthorised parties.  Your school will have access to view and restore data directly.

IT DATA PROTECTION

We recently supported a Birmingham school that experienced a ransomware attack. The attack was understood to have specifically targeted their remote desktop and exchange servers before spreading across the wider network. This resulted in the enforced closure of the school as all files, MIS, safeguarding, curriculum, and finance systems were encrypted and inaccessible.

Fortunately, the school had already purchased our FileSafe cloud backup service, which meant that an exact copy of their data was held in our secure cloud storage and safe from malicious encryption.

​

The school was then able to successfully restore their systems and data, allowing them to be fully operational within two days.

​

As part of the work to get the school back up and running, we assisted with the restoration process for all of their servers which had been backed up using our FileSafe platform.

​

We also took the opportunity to work with the school technical staff to move their physical servers into a new virtual environment, to help save money by reducing the number of servers on site, reducing the electricity consumption, and allowing for quicker recovery in the future, should this ever happen again.

This involved restoring the servers onto a new Windows Server Hyper-V host server, which was completely segregated from the domain that was compromised by the cyber-attack.

The SIPS IT team worked out of hours over the weekend to assist in this process to ensure minimal downtime for the school.

WHY DO YOU NEED FILESAFE 365?

BUT, DOESN’T MICROSOFT 365 COVER ME?

In today's digital landscape, cyber attacks have become an alarming and prevalent threat to
the education sector. Educational institutions, ranging from schools to universities, are
increasingly targeted by malicious actors seeking unauthorized access, sensitive data
breaches, or disruption of academic activities. The extensive use of online platforms for
learning, administrative tasks, and data storage makes educational institutions attractive
targets. Implementing robust cybersecurity measures is crucial to protect sensitive student
and staff information, maintain the integrity of academic processes, and ensure a secure

WHY DO YOU NEED 365 BACKUP?

Microsoft is a force to be reckoned with, and the recovery capabilities they do provide are
about 99.9999% reliable, but while it’s pretty much perfect at what it does, there’s still a lot
of room for scenarios that could spell disaster. While Microsoft 365 has a few short-term
recoverability options like the Recycle Bin and soft deletion, the support that comes with
these is limited and it doesn’t include out-of-the-box, long-term recoverability options!
There are many content alterations that cannot be reversed, such as rolling back versioning
on critical information or changes to permissions of files and locations. Additionally, not all
content is supported by the Recycle Bin.

​Accidents happen, and mistakes can leave your school at a standstill, costing money in
productivity. But with backup for Microsoft 365, you can protect yourself against
unforeseen circumstances, loss of data caused by human error, such as misplaced,
deleted, or altered content, an outage, or a ransomware attack. You don’t have to sound
the alarms yet, though, as the most common scenarios include the need to restore content
from previous employees and correct errors made by users.
